Before you begin a weight loss program or make your healthy lifestyle changes, use this focal point in your life to embark on a total body detox program - it’s great way to start your new life with vigour. Learning how to detox the right way can begin the process of eliminating the toxins embedded deep within your organs and skin tissues, left behind by processed foods and pharmaceutical residues.
The biggest benefit you will gain when you detox your body is that of protecting yourself against disease and revitalising your whole body. Ideally, you should undergo a total body detox program three times a year - though you could change a couple of those to “just” a liver detox. Whatever option you choose, as a rule of thumb, each detox program you undertake should be for no less than three days.
A three day detox will have a very beneficial impact on removing toxins, mucous and arterial sludge from your system, but if you have a chronic condition of any form, you may want to hold out for a 7 day detox. The only drawback being that you’ll probably need a little more will power to keep it up for the full 7 days - though you’ll be glad you did when you finish. Either way, here’s a list of some of the benefits you can expect to enjoy after a thorough cleansing.
Better cognitive functioning and mental alertness - a more efficient and cleaner smelling body due to the cleansed digestive tract - easier and more efficient respiratory system due to elimination of mucous - a purer bloodstream and more efficient kidneys and liver - enhanced complexion and skin tone - improved sleep patterns and deeper sleep - firmer and smaller stomach due to elimination of waste build-up in your digestive tract - more energy - less dependency on drugs like caffeine, alcohol and nicotine
If you can muster the willpower for a 7 day detox program, these benefits will be even more noticeable - so well worth the extra effort.
Preparing For Your Detox Program
If this is your first time on a detox, or you eat a lot of red meat and dairy products, it’s advisable to prepare for your detox with a 3 day vegetarian diet, just to get your body ready, and to help make the detox program more effective for yourself. Foods like beans, edible seeds, whole grain cereals, soy and unsalted nuts are an ideal protein replacement, and are quite easy to get used to. If you’re not sure, talk to your doctor or nutritionist first to make sure.
The How To’s Of Detoxing
While you’re on the detox program you should not consume any cooked food or dairy products. Don’t drink tap water - instead either use purified water, coconut water or fit a quality water filter to your drinking water system.
Eat only locally produced fruits and veg that are in season - fruits grown out of season are usually force grown and likely contain lots of preservatives which were fed to the trees during growing. Also, no sweeteners - sugar cane or cane juice is OK.
At least one glass of green juice should be consumed daily (see instructions below on preparation). Green juices come packed with an artillery of iron, calcium, vitamin C, folic acid and other nutrients, as well as cancer fighting antioxidants and phyto-chemicals.
If you can afford it, aloe vera is great for detoxing (and every day health benefits). It’s a powerful skin healer and works wonders on your insides and digestive tract. The best time to take it is last thing at night before bed.
Another favourite of mine is what I call the Immune Booster. It’s basically orange juice with garlic, but to that you can add guava or passion fruit as these will really boost the vitamin c levels.
Green Juice.
Take the following ingredients and juice together (or blend together and strain): lime juice, cucumber, fresh ginger, coconut water (or purified/filtered water), and any green vegetables like broccoli, string beans, okra, parsley, spinach, callaloo, pakchoy, etc.
It’s not really important which green vegetables you use, so long as they are fresh, and the end result is a very green colored juice. You may also like to try adding carrot juice to sweeten the taste. To make an aloe vera juice, simply take a third of a leaf, peel it and blend with a grapefruit or orange.
