Boost your performance as HIPs swing into action

As of the middle of December 2007 the much debated Home Information Packs were introduced for all houses in the UK.  The main feature of the pack is the Energy Performance Certificate, and sellers now need to search for ways to improve their home’s rating on the new certificate to make sure they have a competitive edge.

The easiest and most cost effective way to improve a home’s rating is simple: insulation.  Laid in just a morning, putting down 270mm of insulation in the loft will help your home become more energy efficient.  Adding cavity wall insulation will also make a huge difference and help sellers to boost their home’s credentials.

Lydia Sharples from www.thinkinsulation.com says: “If you took a typical house with no insulation and insulated the walls and roof to the standards required by subsidization measures, you could improve a home’s score on the Energy Performance Certificate by up to 19 points. If the loft already has a basic level of 100mm of insulation then the improvement could still be as high as 10 points.”

To do-it-yourself, loft insulation can be installed in 2-3 hours for about £250 in a typical home.  After an insulation upgrade a house will be more comfortable to live in – cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and will have lower heating bills. Those who enjoy DIY can get handy tips from www.thinkinsulation.com, a new eco website.  The site also provides links to other useful sources of information such as obtaining Government subsidies and advice on who to contact about cavity wall insulation.

Lydia Sharples from www.thinkinsulation.com continues: “There’s lots of information out there at the moment, which can be confusing for people who want to find simple and quick ways to upgrade their homes for the HIPs.  The website gives homeowners easy tips on how to do just this, helping them to understand how they can play their part and take action to make their home more energy efficient.”

Households across the UK could save a massive £3.2 billion in 2008 if the recommended amount of insulation (270mm) was fitted in each one.  Currently heat is escaping through the roofs of over 14 million homes each day, a figure the Government is trying to cut*.

Fascinating facts about loft insulation from www.thinkinsulation.com:

1. Nearly 50% of all the heat lost in an average home is through the roof and walls

2. The amount of heat lost in homes annually through roofs and walls is enough to heat around 2.2million UK homes for a year

3. Insulation in an empty loft can pay for itself in just over 2 years

4. Loft insulation can be installed in 2-3 hours in most cases

5. Most homeowners can install loft insulation themselves for about £250

6. Buildings, mainly our homes, are the biggest culprit when it comes to carbon emissions – they consume 40% of all energy

7. By upgrading their insulation, homeowners make their homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer

8. It’s important to choose the right kind of insulation. For instance, insulation made out of glasswool, such as Space Blanket or Space Combi-Roll, is made from up to 15 recycled glass bottles per roll, making it even better for the environment

9. Some households are entitled to a subsidy to install loft and cavity wall insulation – some even get it free.  The Government recommends a minimum insulation thickness of 270mm

10. www.thinkinsulation.com will arrange a survey for your home and can quote homeowners for the insulation they need
