We all learn new skills throughout our life - and schooling doesn’t stop when we leave school. Whether we decide to pick up a drawing pencil or a flute, we can decide to learn a new skill or pick up a new artistic pursuit. One great new skill to learn is learning how to cook, no matter what your age.

Cooking is definitely not just a practical skill, although we do tend to use some aspect of it everyday. It’s also something artistic, a hobby, something to learn and cultivate as a genuine art form within ourselves. You’ve probably already learned some basic skills by just watching others in the kitchen.

Depending on your temperament, there are many ways you can learn how to cook, from very beginners to those who have a bit of experience. You can always take a cooking class, which can teach you easy cooking to more complex items like pastry techniques and regional cuisine.

TV is a great tool for learning how to cook. There are many different television programs on today that teach people how to cook, as well as DVDs or videos. They work well if you need to learn a visual technique - how to chop onions, or slice a ham, or maybe even knead bread.

One of the best ways, however, to learn to cook, is by reading books. This is the old standby method of learning to cook - next to learning from relatives like mom and grandma, of course - and it still works. Learning to cook by reading about cooking is a great way to gain experience with cookery.

Learn to cook through books by looking through a lot of books, either at a library or bookstore. Buy a few basic cookbooks that you like best, and keep them in your cookbook library. Read through the recipes as well as the instructional parts of the cookbooks to get a feel for the writing.

Books that are flashy, written by celebrities or seem too complex are probably not your best choice for beginning cooking or learning to cook. Stick with basic cookbooks that are full of information about things like ingredients, choosing foods, cooking times and basic recipes that you can follow.

Reading to learn how to cook might not seem like the easiest way, but if it’s worked for generations it can work for you too. Combine your reading with a lot of practice, and look into schooling from other sources like classes and shows, and you’ll earn to cook quickly and well.
