Wild Game Meats Are Healthy, Tasty, and Now Available

The term “wild game” generally refers to wild animals and birds.  Let’s contrast wild game with farm-raised game.  Farm raised game are originally wild species of animals and birds that have been raised for sale under existing State regulations. These regulations are important to consumers because game species raised on farms under appropriate conditions can be sold via the marketplace to the end consumer.

When most people hear the term wild game meat, they think of game harvested or hunted in the wild.  Actually, wild game meat in the consumer sector refers to farm raised game.  There’s a major difference.  Farm raised game has been raised under strict State regulations and is intended for individual sale and consumption.  The end result is a cleaner, milder taste due to how the game is raised and feed stipulations.

There is one major distinction between wild game, as most people think of it, vs. farm raised game.  Farm raised game is intended for the individual consumer, while wild game can be harvested but not sold in the consumer marketplace.  Also, farm raised game has much greater health benefit, and taste, as mentioned.

It’s not uncommon to see game meats like buffalo, ostrich, and elk on restaurant menus.  In fact, several prominent chain restaurants feature these meats due to rising consumer demand.  While these meats being served to diners are actually farm raised game, the term wild game meat is still the most widely used and accepted term when discussing non traditional cuts of meat.

How Healthy Are Wild Game Meats?

As an added benefit, wild game meats are extremely high in protein and low in carbohydrates.  These benefits have led to higher demand, particularly as consumers try these cuts of meat and learn how good they taste and how easy they are to prepare.  While these meats are infrequently available in supermarkets, several specialty suppliers sell directly to the consumer market.

In addition to being extremely low in fat, wild game meats have high protein contents.  Diners and consumers are realizing the benefits of high protein, low carb diets, but demand foods that are easy to prepare and taste good.  Most people are pleasantly surprised how good wild game meats taste.  Preparation of elk meat, buffalo meat, ostrich meat, and others are extremely simple, as they are normally available as burgers, medallions, roasts, or steaks.  Wild game meat products almost always come with recipes and preparation tips in order to eliminate cooking concerns.

Wild game meats are rapidly becoming part of mainstream diets and restaurant choices due to their savory taste and health benefits. Elk, buffalo, ostrich, caribou, and many more types of wild game are available and easy to prepare as roasts, steaks, burgers, and more.
