5 Rude Behaviors To Watch Out For At Gold's Gym

Gold's Gym is A Great Facility That Has Superb Equipment

Gold’s Gym is A Great Facility That Has Superb Equipment

I’m not picking on Gold’s Gym, I belonged to Gold’s for 5 years and got some amazing workouts in. The gym owners and the company is a good one, some of the members on the other hand...that is what this article is going to focus on. For some reason, there is a certain type of guy that is drawn to Gold’s. They like to call themselves hardcore, I call them obnoxious! I want to call some of these guys out, so we an make the gym a better and safer place for everyone involved.

1) Dropping Dumbbells After Every Set: This sort of drama drives me nuts. These guys have the Napoleon Complex in a major way! It is almost as if they believe that dropping the weights is hardcore and that if you don’t you aren’t working out hard enough. Their argument is that they are lifting heavy and I must lift wussy weights. The funny thing is that I use 100+ pound dumbbells in several lifts and these guys are dropping anything over 60 pounds! Maybe they aren’t strong enough to set their weights back to the ground slowly.

2) Excessive Grunting During Sets: Now, I do realize that if someone is attempting a 700+ single in the squat or deadlift that they probably will make a bit of noise. I’m not talking about those guys. I’m addressing the guy screaming doing a set of 10 reps on preacher curls, or during a set of leg extensions. Seriously, this is just as bad if not worse than dropping dumbbells. Gym manager’s need to do a better job monitoring this stuff. This creates a prison like atmosphere in the gym. My favorite thing to do is to sit next to these guys grab a heavier weight and do it for more reps in complete silence and then give them a smirk.

3) Not Putting the Weights Back: This one is really annoying, because it shows a blatant disrespect to all the gym members and gym faculty. This is a big problem in every gym I’ve worked out at. I’ve seen guys pull of 3 sets of dumbbells for supersets and then leave all three on the ground and just walk away. There is a certain type of guy who does this (see number one and number two on this list). I like to call these guys out and ask them if they are done with all of those weights they left on the ground.

4) Standing in Front of The Dumbbell Rack During Sets: This is just plain lazy behavior. Have you ever seen a guy grab a set of dumbbells and then proceed to do a set of shrugs or lateral raises right in front of the rack? The problem is that nobody can access those weights during his set. This happens to me all the time. I will squeeze right in front of the person and grab a set of dumbbells just to piss them off. This angers them every time, but I explain to them that is they weren’t working out right in front of the rack this wouldn’t be an issue.

5) Using 2+ pieces of Equipment at Once: This isn’t a problem if the person doing this allows you to work in. It is a problem if the guy thinks that he can tie up all 2-3 pieces of equipment for 10 minutes. I have hopped on a bench after seeing that nobody has been on it for 5 minutes only to have a guy scream from across the gym “I’m using that!” I typically will call them on it and tell them that I saw that they were doing a different exercise. I always end up working in with these guys, regardless of if they want to or not. I simply won’t tolerate this type of behavior.

Summary: There is absolutely nothing wrong with Gold’s Gym. I hope that isn’t what people take away from this article. I am just hoping that people will stop some of these guys from ruining these great facilities.
