Over the past few decades, we have seen an unbelievable amount of technological innovations and developments.  For some reason, however, people have become confused and have started calling every simple technological development that comes along an innovation.  But while much of the new technology, such as loading DVD to iPod, is pretty cool, it is not, technically speaking, innovative.

Any easy way to figure out if something is an innovation is to ask whether or not it has revolutionized the world.  Has it completely changed the world’s understanding of something?  Has it completely changed the way we live?  If the answer is no, then it is not an innovation.  New technology like loading DVD to iPod is exciting and definitely useful, but it is not an innovation because it hasn’t revolutionized anything.

But even though it’s not an innovation, loading DVD to iPod is still a pretty cool technological development.  It has provided us with the convenience of being able to watch TV and movies whenever and wherever we want.

It really is amazing when you stop to consider just how far our entertainment options have come in the last fifty years.  The only options you had in the 1960’s were to watch a television program as it aired on one of the four stations or go to a movie theater and watch whatever happened to be playing.  It’s pretty remarkable.

Of course, technology is only as good as it is useful to the end user, so the ability to covert DVD to iPod was quickly followed by a new technological development, DVD to iPod converters.  This technology exploded, and it seemed like every week there was another company introducing their new converter to the world.

Consumers really benefitted from the competition that ensued.  Conversion speeds, copy quality and storage capabilities of converters all increased as each company strove to corner the DVD to iPod converter market.

Most companies went after as wide a market as possible and designed universal converters that could be used by both PC and Apple users.  Other companies created specialty converters that were designed specifically for a Windows platform or a Macintosh platform.

Others companies focused on convenience.  They figured that the most important thing was to provide customers with a DVD to iPod converter that would enable them to load up their iPods with a simple click of a button.

Of course the winners of this battle were the companies savvy enough to focus on designing converters that were both universal and convenient.  These companies developed the most innovative, versatile and easy-to-use DVD to iPod converters that are available today.  These are the converters that now dominate the market because anyone can use them and they make loading DVD to iPod super easy.

So even though loading DVD to iPod is not an innovation, it is still a pretty cool technological development that continues to evolve. It will certainly be interesting to see the next evolution.  Who knows what the future could bring - it could even bring a DVD to brain converter!
