Personal development plans are certainly very popular today and can be put together to help you with everything from career improvement to weight loss to public speaking.

You can use many different methods and a variety of tools to achieve your desired personal development outcome and they come at prices to suit all pockets from expensive seminars to cheap books and ebooks. But, in reality, you don’t have to spend very much, if anything, to put together a flexible and useable plan to help you achieve your goals. Here are a few steps you can take:

1) Identify the Cause The best starting point for a self-development plan is to identify how you arrived in the position you’re in right now. As an example, if your own personal development goal involves weight loss then you should have a look at the lifestyle factors that have led to your weight problem. Commit to paper all the reasons you can think of for your problem and then try to come up with a list of achievable solutions that will get you to your desired goal.

2) Goal Setting You need to have a definite goal in mind if you are to have any chance of success. Spend some quality time on this. Failing to set well-defined goals is probably the biggest reason that most people fail in their personal development.

3) Make a Plan Once you have decided on your goal then formulate a plan that details the steps you will take to reach your goal. Use the details you uncovered when identifying the cause of the problem and expand on these to incorporate as much detail as possible on how you can achieve your personal development goal.

4) Focus and Commitment Once you know your goal and have designed your plan you then need to focus on your goal and commit to the plan you have designed. Set aside a certain amount of time each day to work on your plan and do not allow general daily chores to distract you from what you need to do. Once you have become accustomed to working on your plan each day it will become a habit and therefore easier over time to stick too.

5) Look for Inspiration Try to find some role models to insire you. If you can find some others who have achieved similar goals to the ones you aspire to. If you can’t find any individuals to insire you, you can get inspiration from books, seminars or DVDs.

Personal development is about identifying areas of your life that you wish to change for the better and having an attitude of continual self-improvement.

Whichever area of your life you have decided you need to improve, if you diligently apply the steps listed above you will gain the confidence that will give you the belief that you can achieve anything you want to achieve.
