“I love you” translates into “Te iubesc” in Romanian. In fact, these are the words every Romanian girl yearns to hear from their sweetheart, ever since she hears them being said in a movie, or read about it in a book. Saying those magical words is a must for any relationship to bloom in Romania.

Normally girls do not like to confess that they are in love with a boy. It is a sort of masculine privilege and duty, you might say. The first “Te iubesc” could also be more emotionally charged than the first kiss. So when do you say “Te iubesc”? How do you say it, and to whom? These are the vital questions haunting anyone in love with a Romanian girl.

In life and in love nothing is alike, as you well know. Each relationship is special, each person has something special, and each person has a different way of thinking. Therefore, love has no general recipes, but there are some tips though, which can be taken into consideration if you figure out that one day you may say “te iubesc” to somebody.

It would be unwise to say “te iubesc” to someone you have just met. Love at first sight can be tricky business. In most cases, it can be just an infatuation, even plain sexual attraction. It generally involves burning passion rather than warm affection, and is like a tornado that leaves a trail of destruction in its trail.

In Romania, “Te iubesc” does not signify an immediate or urgent passion. Rather it has a gentler and more mature connotation. It could mean “I want to be with you forever, to hold your hands and look deep into your eyes, to find you by my side when I wake up every morning.” Romanians tend not to profess their love in a hurry. They would rather wait till get to know the object of their affection better.

You can say “I love you” when you are really in Love with that person and you can feel it. There is a matter of pride though. Some people say: “Why should I be the first one to confess my love?” The most unpleasant situation is when a woman says “I love you” and she receives an answer like “yeah” or an infatuated grin. In such cases intuition should operate. You can notice when a boy wants to say “I love you” but he does not dare. So one of you should utter these words

The timing of saying these magic words is important as well. You should first create a romantic atmosphere or find a romantic setting. It could be foolish, if you are a girl, to profess your love when he is watching a football match on television.

You must also say it for the first time in person, not in an e-mail or a SMS. Afterwards you can reiterate it by whatever means, especially by your gestures and by paying attention to the things he or she likes, to show that you care. Finally, if you want to know how to say “I love you” in Romanian, the answer is: “te iubesc, m-ai vrajit tu cu ceva daca am spus-o” (I love you; you somehow fascinate me so much that I had to tell you).
