Schools in early American history were characteristically schools promoting Classical Christian education.  Normally, the instructors were ministers who had an educational background in classical languages, literature, and Protestant theology.

As a result, students studied the bible in its original Greek and Hebrew along with other classics in Greek.

Many of the most brilliant leaders and thinkers were a direct result of classical Christian education. The challenging and rigorous education forces the students to think and reason, which is why it’s a winning system.

Sadly, the current educational system in the nation has dishonored the value of this commodity.  With the irrational and classless changes that the current system makes, academic degrees show nothing about a person’s thinking abilities.

Classical Christian education and other education models of the past, contrariwise, are characterized by hard work and book knowledge.

The ability to reason and analyze comes largely from reading. This scholarly ability is of the utmost importance in Classical Christian education, and it was developed for a better understanding and application of the Scriptures.

In colonial times, education wasn’t just about learning Christian doctrines or the Christian faith. It was also about studying and classifying reality using the teaching and principles laid out in the Bible. It was through Christian lenses that colonial people examined education, social theories, and philosophy.

Classical Christian education has existed in America since the early 1900s. The education was based not just on Christian principles and values, but high academic standards. The results were amazing.

How can we have some of the same results in our era?  How can we teach in such a manner when the teachers of today aren’t trained in teaching in the classical method?  For starters, we need to start with what we have.

We can teach from the Bible.  We can teach from centuries of classic texts.  There are great works of literature, history, science, and theology that are translated into English.

While it might seem as though Classical Christian education is outdated, the design is sound; it can produce a student who has the reasoning and analytical ability to read a profound book, then write a compelling essay about it. And more than anything else, it is designed to lead students to God.
