Costa Almeria Property

A view on the property market in Almeria, Spain.

By Gary Cotter

Although there has been a slow down in property (real estate) sales throughout Spain and it’s islands for the last couple of years, the Province of Almeria and in particular the Costa Almeria has stood up quite well. With the lack of airports and the budget airline effect, it has been that much more difficult to get to, especially for short breaks. Development of Murcia (San Javier) Airport (although it is in the Costa Calida, Murcia) has helped in the north, bringing many towns within an hours drive. Prices are probably lower than the rest of the popular tourist destinations in Spain and there are certainly bargains still to be found on the coast and if you are prepared to venture a few miles inland you can get a lot for your money. Villas and old townhouses can still be picked up for less than the price of a static caravan in the UK and half the price of a small apartment on the Costa del Sol. Old country houses (“Cortijo”) that need renovating are still to be found for the more adventurous to undertake, some are very large with up to 10 bedrooms not being that uncommon. The other advantage is that Costa Almeria still retains more of a “Spanish” feel, unlike the ever popular Costa Blanca, you won’t find a “pub” or Irish bar on every corner. The weather is a dream, very dry and plenty of sunshine with mild winters, making it an all the year round destination, especially for golfers keen to get away from the mud of England in the spring and autumn. So if you like the quieter type of holiday and want to get away from the hustle of the more traditional Spanish destinations, the towns of Almeria might be worth considering.
