This breed is currently in the process of being recognized by the Foundation Stud Service and has an active parent club in the unites states.

This organization has several requirements for breed membership. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing the Spanish mastiff doesn’t quite qualify. But as always we are sure it will gain admission soon which will only increase the popularity of the mastiff breed even more.

Mastiff Dog Origins

This dog is originally from Spain and is part of the mastiff breed. They are used as guard dogs for cattle and sheep in some parts of Spain. The Spanish Mastiff are gentle mannered with children and noted for having an even temper. This dog will not tolerate uninvited visitors and is prone to aggression with other dogs. This mastiff can be quite content as an outdoor dog and if the situation arises to keep him inside then care should be taken that he have daily walks and/or access to a large fenced in yard.

Identified as being large dogs is this particular mastiff breed. They have long legs, tend to be longer then they are tall and have deep chests. The expected mastiff dewlap is present along a large head and deep muzzle.

Dewlap is what? Loosely hanging beneath the chin and over the topof the chest are fold or folds of skin. This serves primarily as a deterrent to predators. It works by preventing a would be predator from sinking it’s teeth into this most vulnerable part of the dog’s anatomy. The coat on this breed tends to be very dense. With colors that range from fawn,lemon,wolf gray and black and white. The coat’s main function is to protect the dog from weather extremes.
