Skin care and beauty mavens have often told us to wash our face gently with mild cleansers and moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. But are these enough? Soon enough age will come creeping and claim ownership of that smooth blemish-free skin. What’s a woman to do?

Among women wrinkles are a major concern. Fine lines develop over time due to repeated muscle tension especially around the eyes and mouth when we smile and on the forehead and between the eyes when we frown. They become deeper and more pronounced as we age.

Each of the hundreds of anti-aging skin care product flooding the market today claim instantaneous results in eliminating wrinkles or reducing them over only a short period. An article from the Mayo Clinic, however, emphasized that results depend a lot on the active ingredients found in those anti-wrinkle creams and serums, specifically peptides like Argireline and Matrixyl.

Argireline, which has the chemical name of Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 (AH3), is one of the most often used active ingredients as an alternative to botox. It is sometimes referred to as “topical botox”. By inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters that initiate and control the intensity of muscular contractions of the face, it relaxes neural endings in wrinkles.

Based on a clinical study published by the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, AH3 was able to reduce the depth of wrinkles up to 30% after just 30 days of continued use, and a 17% reduction of fine lines around the eyes after only 15 days of treatment. What’s more impressive is that the tests showed a 39% improvement in smoothness, 42% improvement in dryness and 45% improvement in overall skin tone. Regular use of the product and application of it limited only to those problematic areas can lead to positive results.

A similar peptide ingredient, Matrixyl (also known as Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3), has shown to be as effective as Retinol in repairing sun-damaged skin and reducing fine lines but without the harmful side effects. It can also be considered as a safer option to use for people who develop skin irritation from retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids.

Though synthetically made, these two peptides are very safe for human use. When combined with copper, which is a natural trace element in living cells, they stimulate collagen production and enhance antioxidant processes.

A good advice for those considering buying an anti-aging skin care products is to read wrinkle cream reviews of them and evaluate the wrinkle cream ratings other users have given them. It’s better to see what negative and positive feedbacks were given for the best anti-aging creams and serums available on the market today.
