He didn’t hold the door; that’s the one thing your date must do. Or, maybe he reminds you of your ex or maybe he just disgusts you. Whatever it is, it’s been 45 minutes and you already can’t stand this guy.

Without it being awkward, there are ways to get out of dates like this. These are a few tips:

Planning a short date. A walk in the park with your dogs, a cup of coffee, a quick drink, these are all dates that will take less than an hour.  First dates should never last four hours.

Tell him you need to be somewhere. Don’t make it a big deal, but if you have hesitation about this guy, tell him something believable like you have to go to a friend’s birthday party later. Whether it’s before the date or within the first few minutes of the date, make it known.

Desert? None for me. If you want the date to be over, don’t agree to more.

If he’s rude, let him know. Total jerks will be total jerks no matter what you do, but it’s ok to be clear you’re not interested if he offends you. For example, if in the first 20 minutes he asks you who you’ve been hooking up with, you can respond casually, “None of your business! I’m not looking to hook up with anyone right now.”

Do not agree to call. If you’re not going to call, don’t say you will. Tell him it was nice to meet him and you wish him the best. This is perfectly ok. Hopefully he’ll get the point and not call you.

Shaking his hand. No hugging or kissing required if you don’t like him. This is a perfect indicator that there won’t be a second date.
