Did you know that thousands of movies, videos and TV shows can be accessed through your computer? Your laptop can be used as a portable television allowing TV viewing wherever you have Internet access.

Things are even more interesting if your Internet connection is wireless. These are just a few of the benefits of watching TV on the computer and this article will give you four tips on how to do this.

1) If you enjoy movie classics, documentaries or simply have a desire to revisit the shows that you watched as a kid, try looking for them in the public domain. Anything with an expired copyright that was never renewed is considered to be in the public domain and is free to be used in any way that you wish.

Try looking for this material on a search engine using phrases containing ‘public domain’ plus ‘film’ or ‘video’, etc. With just a bit of persistence, some real gems can be uncovered.

2) You can make your PC monitor display video signals in the same way that your TV does by buying and installing a TV tuner card into your computer. An added bonus to this is the capability of many tuner cards to record TV programs to your hard drive for instant playback.

No Internet connection is necessary here since the TV tuner inputs the same signals that your TV set does. If you are looking for quality, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $200.

3) How do you get a DVD quality image when viewing a movie on your PC? Answer: insert a DVD into your CD-ROM drive! In order to do this, you need to download the appropriate media player with this capability.

You can get a freebie at Realplayer.com. Look for and click on the ‘Get it free’ button. Follow the directions after this. After installing it, Insert a DVD, start up the player and open the ‘Play’ menu. Then click ‘Play CD or DVD’.

4) One of the more popular ways to watch TV on the computer involves the use of software that allows you to watch satellite TV over the Internet. Since the TV shows come over the Internet, no satellite dishes or other hardware is required. All that you need is a PC and an Internet connection.

The software promises access to 3000 or better channels world wide and will cost from $40 to about $100. Install the software once and you gain unrestricted access to thousands of channels for free.

Hopefully you now see your computer in a whole new light and will take advantage of the enormous entertainment possibilities available at your fingertips. With time, Internet TV and video will only increase in number and quality.

If you haven’t done so already, you really need to explore this great new medium.
