As a business owner, you must keep in mind that continually motivating your employees is an important aspect for business success.  Take note that money is not your only motivating tool.  You also have to think of measures to ensure that your workplace is a happy, satisfying and safe environment for all employees.

You want a workplace which ensures that the employees come to the office on their work days with a positive feeling.

Here are some ways that a Hostile Work environment ruins employee morale:

An employee’s performance in the workplace is affected by two factors - mental and emotional.  A happy employee who enjoys what he does will, as a consequence, perform well.  This can even be measured in the bottom-line metrics of the company.

At the very least, a hostile work environment would mean that the employee is not satisfied with the workplace and its work ethos.  In such a case, the employee would feel disgruntled towards his employer which may eventually cause a dip in performance and worse still, may lead to him leaving the company.

How is the organization affected by a Hostile Work Environment?

Providing a safe and secure workplace is one of the company’s major duties to its employees.  The company can open the door to negative issues that may cause productivity to take a turn for the worse.  For instance, in the case when the company does not have measures to prevent a manager from demanding sexual favors from a subordinate, the company will find itself with a mentally and emotionally upset employee.  In turn, this condition will have a negative impact on the employee’s performance.

This is even truer for employees who are particularly productive and who turn out quality work.  Being victimized can not only lead to a dip in the employee’s performance, and it can even keep that employee from ever achieving the same level of productivity.  Someone who returns from work after an alleged hostile incident may still suffer from more harassment.  When such conditions remain unchecked, it will also affect other members of the organization.

How can the presence of a Hostile Work Environment be avoided?

Since it is inferred that a Hostile Work Environment is extremely dangerous for an employee and an organization, steps must be taken to ensure that the workplace is conductive for the employee to do his or her work.  This can be done by educating the employees of laws governing a safer workplace.  The employees should also ideally be educated on internal policies of the company - particularly in the case of an employee found guilty of conducting inappropriate behavior towards his or her colleague.

In the wider legal sense, the punishments for an employee who behaves inappropriately toward another colleague can be very serious, ranging from termination of employment to incarceration.  All employees must therefore ensure that a safe, harassment-free workplace is provided to their colleagues at all costs.
