When you’re considering a new cross stitch designer, finding free counted cross stitch patterns at local crafts stores are a godsend. Quite often, however, it is easier to find what you are looking for online; this brings the stitcher and designer together without having to pay out any money.

What is the best way to find these patterns?  Many can be found by using a search engine or you can look on free cross stitch patterns sites.  Using Google or some other search engine, type in “free counted cross stitch patterns” or “cross stitch freebies,” and you’ll be amazed at the number of hits you will find, more than you’ll ever need.

Some sites exist solely to help you find free cross stitch patterns on the net. Categorised by subject matter or even technique they make it easy to find just what you are looking for. If the site has an RSS feed it is even easier nowadays, you can be informed as soon as something new is added.

Does giving their work for free make sense for the designer or manufacturer? Actually, it does because they can allow you to see the quality of the charts and instructions that they sell. If you are happy with the ease of use, you will be more likely to purchase a pattern from them in the future.

Another reason manufacturers offer free patterns and graphs is to encourage you to purchase their products. If you don’t need to spend money on patterns, you can spend it on fabrics and threads. Some free patterns may encourage you to use a specialty brand of thread that you might not normally purchase.

Remember, although these patterns are offered freely, the designers still hold the copyright. They are not free for you to make money from, after all the designer themselves aren’t!  If you stitch for charity, it may well be worth asking the designer for permission to stitch a limited number in order to raise funds. I am usually agreeable to this as long as I am asked and the stitcher doesn’t intend to make hundreds of items.

One of the best reasons to try free counted cross stitch patterns is that they allow you to experiment and try a new technique or stitch that you might not have attempted if you had to pay for it. All you need to get started are supplies, a computer, printer and lots of spare time.
