Now that you have installed your security system in your home you need to know how to test it to be sure the different components are operating as they should.  Among these components, of course, will be your burglar alarm battery, sensors and control panel.

In this article we will take you through the steps you need to carry out in order to test your alarm system correctly.  It is important that you schedule time to carry out a testing of the alarm system every month.

First, before you actually test the system, you should read through the manual that comes with it very carefully.  By doing this you will actually help to prevent yourself from setting the alarm off accidentally.  This is even more important if you have a monitored system.  Also you should inform the monitoring center that you are testing the system.

Looking in your documents, you should an index or guidelines section that will give you the step by step of what to do to test the alarm system with the burglar alarm battery, the control panel and all the sensors.  Read this through several times so there is no question about the steps to take.

Knowing just what you need to so you are able to rapidly disarm the system and having the disarming codes close by are also important.  This is for a just in case scenario where an accidental triggering happens.  Make sure you do not leave the codes close to the control panel though after the system is tested.  Another help would be to have someone in the house with you who knows the codes and can help you quickly if something should go wrong.

Next be sure to alert everyone in the house that you are about to begin testing the burglar alarm system.  Be sure to make sure all doors and windows are closed for the test to work properly.  Now you can begin your test.

At this point it’s finally time to start the testing of your security system.  Use the special code for this that is found in your owner’s manual to key the testing to begin.  After the test is over, the system should have highlighted any errors that came up.  If this system is monitored, your monitoring center may also have a record of the errors.

Among the problems you may find could be a problem with the burglar alarm battery.  If so, you will most likely need to replace it in accordance with the guidelines of the documentation.  Even if during this month’s testing of your security system you find no problem with the burglar alarm battery, you will want to change it out to the time line as outlined in the owner’s manual.
