Getting a pet is great for kids and adults alike. That being said, a certain responsibility comes with owning a pet. To make sure things go well, consider the following tidbits of advice.

1. Puppy Chewing Problems – If your puppy is chewing everything in your house, you need to give them more toys to chew on. You can never have enough, so save your house.

2. Physically Disciplining Cats – You should not hit or swipe at your cat. Instead, discipline them with a water spray bottle. If you do it yourself, the cat will avoid you at all cost.

3. Dry Dog Wash – If you don’t have time to give your dog a bath and they smell bad, you can give them a rub down with baking soda to take the edge off.

4. Pets and Baseball – If you happen to be close to San Diego, take your pup to a Padres game. The grassy area beyond centerfield is often opened to dogs.

5. Chocolate and Cats – If you are eating, you might want to give chocolate tidbits to your little one. Chocolate is very harmful to cats and can easily result in a visit to the vet.

6. Skunk Odors on Dogs – Inquisitive dogs often pay the price with skunks. To get skunk smell off, wash your dog with tomato juice. Then wash them with regular shampoo and rinse. You might have to do it twice.

7. Careful When Picking Names – Picking a name for a pet is good fun, but you need to be careful. A human name can be embarrassing when someone comes over that has the same one.

8. Nocturnal Pets – When getting pets for kids, make sure they are not nocturnal. Dogs and cats are fine, but other common pets are only active at night.

9. One Pet or Two – If you don’t have kids, you need to give some thought to getting a pet. Won’t it be bored all day when you are at work? You might want to get two so they can keep each other company.

10. Pets Pulling Skateboards – Dogs inevitably end up as sled dogs if your kids have skateboards. You should know the leash is strangling them. Get a brace that goes around their chest instead.

Whether you are getting a dog, cat or something more exotic, understanding the needs of your pet is good place to start. Although we all tend to lend human qualities to our pets, they are not human. Make sure you take care of them based on knowledge.
