There has been much discussion recently about prostate massage and the beneficial effects it can have on chronic prostatitis and BPH (enlarged prostate). Previously this was not even considered in medical circles but it is now gaining more credence.

Provided you do not have very severe symptoms, eg. acute prostatitis, prostate massage can be a great help in relieving symptoms. It can be part of the treatment for prostate conditions and can complement antibiotic treatment and herbal remedies. The great advantage is that massage can stimulate the blood circulation in the pelvic area.

If you have cancer of the prostate then this alternative is NOT for you as it can cause metastasis. Similarly if you have an infection of the prostate, then massage is NOT a good idea as it can spread, rather than contain the infection.

Massage of any type can be beneficial, as it releases the endorphins which are essential to maintaining a feeling of well being.  Men who are seated for long periods are going to put an unnecessary strain on the prostate as the blood will tend to stagnate. A massage can get the blood circulating again and the prostate can benefit from this.

A massager tool (there are many types on the market) or the finger can be used to massage the prostate and this is done by stroking the area of the rectal wall behind which is situated the prostate. A gentle circular ,stroking movement is recommended , rather than poking around. This movement will not only flush out all the accumulated debris, but will stimulate blood circulation as well.

This type of massage, carried out regularly over a period of time, can actually reduce the size of the prostate, thereby increasing the flow of urine. Men also notice that there are improvements when they previously suffered from erectile dysfunction. The fact that it stimulates the flow of blood in an area very difficult to reach, means that it is often the most effective prostate treatment available.

Many people do not realize that EXTERNAL massage of the pelvic area can be almost as effective and has a lot of advantages over internal massage. The areas to concentrate on here are the zone above the pubic bone and working up towards the belly button.

Bdefore deciding which type of massage is best for you, there are a few things to take into account. Certainly extrenal massage is much more accessible and can be carried out almost anywhere at any time.  But you may also want to consider herbal remedies as a very easy option where no effort will be required although massage will probably give better results over time. Herbal remedies used contain lycopene (from tomatoes), saw palmetto, zinc , pygeum and beta- sitosterol.
